Historic Lewes

A natural side trip to the Nanticoke Heritage Byway is a visit to historic Lewes, where the state of Delaware has its roots in 1631. Originally a Dutch whaling colony, Lewes was the site of the first European settlement in Delaware. You can even visit the monument to this failed colony on Pilottown Road, which runs parallel to the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. Also consider a visit to the Lewes Historical Society, which rests at the end of historic Second Street downtown. The Cannonball House, 1812 Park and the Lightship Overfalls are also great historical sites you can visit during a trip to the “First Town in the First State.” Learn more about Lewes by visiting the Lewes Chamber of Commerce online at leweschamber.com.
